The rough timeline of events:
Phase 1: Pollution and Disease: Banes feed on negative emotions. Naturally, Phase 1 of a good invasion plot entails seeding the city with those negative emotions. There are a few ways Pentex is planning to do this:
- Tainted water supply: We're talking sewage, chemicals, and Wyrm-taint. Symptoms of infection range from mild headaches and nausea to symptoms resembling Cholera. The object of this is misery, not possession by Banes, so while a lot of people may end up in the hospital, no one will be growing mysterious claws or tentacles. The source of the tainted water eventually leads back to lax standards at a local water treatment plant, an Ardus Enterprises processing facility, and a Magadon, Inc bottling plant.
- Tainted medications: Magadon, Inc makes a huge variety of the medicines normal people use every day. We're talking everything from store-brand aspirin, diet pills, and even birth control. With Magadon's move to LA, just about everything Magadon sells in the area is locally-made. And it's all Wyrm-tainted. Symptoms range from headaches and nausea to, in the worst case scenario, Bane possession. The Banes from these medications make Fomori that are highly unstable and usually die in a few days, taking a lot of people with them.
- Tainted food: Pentex owns several different food companies in the area, all of which put Wyrm-taint at the top of the priority list for this.
- O'Tolley's: A fast food chain. It's safe to say every greasy, fat-filled, preprocessed item on the menu is Wyrm-tainted.
- Young and Smith: Provides store brand food and personal care products for many of the local grocery stores.
- Herrick's: National grocery store chain, similar to Save-A-Lot in its approach to low-cost, generic merchandise. Sells items from other Pentex subsidiaries.
- King Breweries: In a neat little twist of Wyrm-taint, their alcohol doesn't make people sick, but it is does lead to fast addiction.
- Circinus Brands: Makers of a variety of tobacco products. They did one better than King Breweries. Not only are their products very addictive due to Wyrm-taint, they also contain a high amount of carcinogens.
- Smog: A fact of life for Los Angeles, or is it? Expect weeks and weeks of smog at extremely unsafe levels, as local Black Spiral Dancers call upon one of the Wyrm's servants, Hoga, the Essence of Smog. Wyrm spirits prevent fumes from cars, trucks, factories, and the like from dissipating, leading to smog levels seen more in Beijing than in the United States.
- Any shapeshifters in the Umbra (the spirit world) around Los Angeles will notice many, many more Banes than usual clustered around the city. Mystics, psychics, and holy men may notice a definite negative energy in Los Angeles, and are likely to even encounter a Bane or two.
- Stable Fomori begin to appear. These guys may be your friends, neighbors, or even a gas station clerk, but after the Bane possesses them, they usually undergo a complete shift in personality (more on this below). Some of these are brought in by Pentex for testing or training. Others are allowed to run free.
- Wyrm creatures begin to appear. Imported by Pentex or attracted by the suffering, a variety of Wyrm creatures begin to filter into Los Angeles. Monsters like War Wolves, Skull Pigs, Heart Eaters, and even Thunderwyrms filter in at this stage. They aren't pretty, they aren't subtle, and they like nothing better than to cause as much fear and death as possible.
- There are several Caerns scattered around Los Angeles and the surrounding desert. Not all of them are claimed by Garou. The Wyrm creatures begin systematically taking over and corrupting each Caern, except for the ones occupied by Garou.
- By this point, Pentex has taken note of potential major enemies. The Rokea are beset by wave after wave of Qyrlings. (Should the writers involved wish to go there, the local Garou could also be affected. Saving someone's most sacred space MIGHT make for really good blackmail to save our favorite White Hats from certain death) High profile people in the community are recruited as allies or attacked (Selene, Tommy, Chandrika, just about anyone else getting on Pentex's nerves, this means you, should you wish to be involved!). The Napa Valley crew live farther away, but the continued absence of their Caern's protector means they might see increased Wyrm activity as well, perhaps even a Dancer-led attack.
- Throughout this, Phases 1 and 2 continue until Good Guys are able to track down the source of the corruption in question and destroy it.
- Pentex gets its greedy hands on a Bane called a Wyrmhole, possessing a human in Los Angeles. It begins to allow Banes to materialize in the physical world. Not subtle. Not pretty. Naturally, with this Bane as an ally, the Wyrm's forces in Los Angeles pick this time to go for complete destruction. The Black Spiral Dancers lead teams of Wyrm minions all over the city, backed by materialized Banes. To deal with the threat without an endless stream of Bane allies, the Good Guys have to kill the Wyrmhole fast. After that, it's time to deal with the Wyrm's army.
- At the same time, Black Spiral Dancers begin a ritual in their home Caern, with the backing of several powerful Wyrm servants, to wake one part of the Wyrm, The Defiler Wyrm. This is a massive undertaking and requires a huge expenditure of spiritual energy, as well as a LOT of time for the ritual to be completed. The Good Guys HAVE to interrupt the process. The last time a part of the Wyrm manifested in this world, an entire tribe of Garou committed suicide to banish it.
- The most obvious consequence is a lot of people traumatized, thinking they've seen monsters. With Black Spirals in Crinos accompanying the other Wyrm creatures around the city, large scale panic due to Delirium is likely. A minority will remember exactly what happened during the night the Wyrm's minions tried to take over.
- The tainted Caerns are reclaimed by the Good Guys. Cleansing the taint and freeing the Caerns from Wyrm control is a massive undertaking, especially in the case of the Dancers' home Caern.
- The sources of the Wyrm-taint are tracked down and stopped. Investigations are launched and lawsuits are filed against the Pentex subsidiaries.
- Most of the Wyrm creatures either flee the city or are killed. The remaining Dancer population is tiny and mostly consists of whichever Dancers Pentex was able to hide from the Good Guys. Kevin spends time in Malfeas as punishment for the failure.
- Bane: An evil spirit. There are many different types, but all have a hunger for pain, fear, and suffering. They appear solid as any living creature in the Umbra, the spirit world, but only a certain few can manifest in the physical realm without the assistance of a Wyrmhole. Banes are able to possess living creatures to create Fomori.
- Fomori: The creature formed when a Bane possesses a living host. Usually human, though animals, shapeshifters, fae, mages, and even vampires can be affected. A vampire's blood renders him immune to the Bane's control while still allowing him to use Fomori powers. Most Banes do not possess vampires on purpose. Fomori are usually hideous in appearance, with 3-5 "powers", and varying degrees of mental instability. The most powerful Fomori cause a great amount of damage, but usually die within 24 hours. The Fomori employed by Pentex usually last longer. Pentex-controlled Fomori are addicted to a drug called Fomorol, which makes the Fomori feel more powerful. The drug is made of dead Fomori. Corpses of Fomori are also used as building material and as sources of Wyrm-taint (when introduced into the water supply, allowed to contaminate soil, etc).
- Wyrm-taint: Spiritual contamination that can be introduced into everyday objects or people. The Wyrm-taint can have varying effects. In a food or medical object, it might cause food poisoning, depression, or even cancer, in addition to making its consumer easier to control by a Bane. In a person, Wyrm-taint manifests as an increase in negative emotion. Sadness, anger, pain, fear, depression, greed, insatiable lust, madness, even the vampire and werewolf Frenzy (there's a reason that a truly out-of-control werewolf is "In the Thrall of the Wyrm"). The Garou ability Sense Wyrm allows a werewolf to sense this Wyrm-taint, but beware werewolves! Innocent people could stink of Wyrm from eating every day at O'Tolley's, while a vampire seems relatively clean! Pentex uses machines in its factories to add Wyrm-taint to its products.
- Pentex: International conglomerate of dozens of the world's well-known companies. Its ties to its subsidiary companies are hidden in a mass of legal documents so vast, it could take years to puzzle it all out. Most people, even subsidiary employees, know Pentex as "Oh THAT'S the name of that office building down the street. I drive by it every day but I never really pay attention, you know?"
- Ardus Enterprises: Pentex subsidiary in charge of disposal of toxic waste. Cited countless times for cutting corners and causing environmental damage.
- Magadon, Inc: Pentex subsidiary and pharmaceutical giant. Produces everything from aspirin to diet pills to prescription drugs. All of their drugs are Wyrm-tainted. Also produces a drug to counter the effect of Delirium, for use in Pentex's First Teams (security teams) and a drug made from vampire blood. Both are experimental and tested on Pentex First Teams.
- O'Tolley's: Pentex subsidiary. A fast food chain. It's safe to say every greasy, fat-filled, preprocessed item on the menu is Wyrm-tainted.
- Young and Smith: Pentex subsidiary. Provides store brand food and personal care products for many of the local grocery stores.
- Herrick's: Pentex subsidiary. National grocery store chain, similar to Save-A-Lot in its approach to low-cost, generic merchandise. Sells items from other Pentex subsidiaries.
- King Breweries: Pentex subsidiary. In a neat little twist of Wyrm-taint, their alcohol doesn't make people sick, but it is does lead to fast addiction.
- Circinus Brands: Pentex subsidiary. Makers of a variety of tobacco products. They did one better than King Breweries. Not only are their products very addictive due to Wyrm-taint, they also contain a high amount of carcinogens.
- The Wyrm: Originally a force of divine balance. It balanced the Chaos of nature with the Order of civilization. When the force of divine Order went mad and succeeded in trapping the Wyrm, it went mad as well. It is now a force of decay and corruption. It desires to destroy the world and remake it in its image. Nicknamed the Hydra for its three personalities, its three heads. Each head represents a corrupted version of the original divine trinity of Chaos, Order, and Balance.
- The Defiler Wyrm: One of the three heads of the Wyrm, representing the corruption of Balance. It is normally trapped deep within the spirit world, the Umbra, but a powerful ritual could set it free. Once manifested in the physical world, its power is nearly limitless. The last time one of the heads of the Wyrm was in the physical world, it took the sacrifice of an entire tribe of Garou to banish it.
- Hoga, Essence of Smog: Just under the three heads of the Wyrm in power, the Essence of Smog is an elemental spirit of air that has been defiled. It is able to send its servants to the physical world to cause pollution and worse.
- War Wolves: The result of a Pentex experiment with Garou DNA. These are normal wolves that can shapeshift to Crinos and crave Garou flesh.
- Skull Pigs: Look like a cross between a tapir and a boar, with a skull-like head. They feed on the dead. If given the bones of a Wyrm creature, they develop a cruel cunning and gift with simple magic spells.
- Heart Eater: Ugly, twisted, vaguely human-looking Wyrm creature. It eats the brain and the heart of its first victim in order to figure out how to fool the victim's lover. It then wears the victim's skin like a costume, sometimes for weeks, in order to get close to the lover. It betrays the lover in the cruelest way possible and feeds on the emotional pain.
- Thunderwyrm: Bred at the old nuclear testing facility in the Arizona desert, in the heart of an underground Black Spiral Dancer Hive known as Trinity Hive. These massive worms have rows of razor-sharp teeth and an insatiable appetite. They usually live deep underground, but come to the surface to feed. The destruction they leave behind looks like tornado destruction. Newly hatched Thunderwyrms are 5 feet long and they keep growing throughout their lives. The most common type found on the surface are well over 20 feet long.
- Wyrmhole: A particularly nasty Bane. It takes over a human, and once that happens it begins bringing Banes into the physical world, even Banes that wouldn't normally be able to manifest there.
- Malfeas: The heart of the Wyrm's territory in the Umbra, the spirit world. Its most powerful servants live here.
- Garou: Werewolves. They are the warriors of Gaia, Mother Earth. Most normal people in the W:tA universe know werewolves from Hollywood, same as anyone in real life. The Garou are extremely paranoid about any normal humans learning about them, and are likely to lash out violently against anyone who casually throws around information about them. They are extremely proud and have a very strong sense of honor. They have a strong hatred of the Wyrm's minions.
- Garou Forms: They are Homid (human form), Glabro (think Teen Wolf or the Wolfman), Crinos (the classic werewolf. causes Delirium), Hispo (prehistoric dire wolf), Lupus (wolf form).
- Delirium: Bone-deep, instinctual terror that most normal humans feel for shapeshifters in Crinos form. Some people are immune or feel it less strongly, due to family history or strength of character. Delirium usually results in the human forgetting about the encounter with the werewolf, or justifying it ("That was a really big bear, wasn't it? I thought it was going to bite my head off!")
- The Umbra: The spirit world. It's comprised of several different worlds. The closest to the physical world is a sort of spiritual echo, with important features echoed in the Umbra. Spiritual contamination or purity in the physical realm is visible in the echo in the Umbra (Wyrm controlled areas might look like a nuclear wasteland, while unspoiled land might look like a lush and vibrant prehistoric jungle). There are worlds deeper in the Umbra that are harder to reach. Some are sacred to the Garou, others harbor minions of the divine trinity. The Wyrm is said to be trapped in the heart of one such world, Malfeas.
- Caern: A wellspring of spiritual energy. These places are revered by the shapeshifters because they are especially close to the spirit world and it is here that they can feel the love and purity of Gaia, Mother Earth, the easiest. When tainted by the Wyrm, they become safe havens for all sorts of Wyrm creatures, including Black Spiral Dancers, and the atmosphere around them is one of horror.
- Black Spiral Dancer: A Garou tribe in service to the Wyrm. They tend to work better with the Wyrm's minions than Garou do with their allies.
